Summer Vacation Photos 101

So we live in Texas, we love Texas in so many ways, however, the weather is not one of them. It’s the hottest and coldest place I’ve ever lived, including FL, CO, CA and Europe. The most extreme weather is smack dab right down the center of the US, like a line going from MI to TX. Tornados, hurricanes, baseball sized hail storms, to name a few. Well, at least we don’t have earthquakes!

We love taking a summer vacation with the kids. This year we decided to go to Santa Barbara, CA. It’s only a 2.5 hour plane ride and then another 2 hour drive to get to SB. This time we stayed in a www.VRBO.com that we loved. It was right in the middle of town and walking distance to the shops, restaurants, and the beach.

Probably the most fun part of the whole trip was when we rented a vintage Bellaire to drive around for the day. It was like we were celebrities, everyone looking and waving. It was so fun! I think we will do this everytime we go on vacation and use Turo.com to find a sweet vintage car!

Top tips for personal photography on vacation:

  1. Shoot at sunrise or sunset for low shadows and more flattering light.

  2. Put your subjects in the shade.

  3. Make sure light is on the faces of your subjects if you shoot backlight. (into the sun)

  4. Raise your shutter speed to underexpose slightly for better results. You can always lighten a photo, but you can’t get back pixels/info that has been overexposed.
