Top 5 Tips For Taking Awesome Photos Outdoors
Sunrise and Sunset: that’s when the sunlight is the softest. It has to travel through many layers of atmosphere at that time of day, so the light rays are weaker. This makes for less harsh shadows on faces. As they say, everyone is more beautiful at sunset.
Seek Shade: open shade is ideal for sunny days- that is, find a shady spot under a tree, for example, but step as close to the light as you can.
Backlight: aiming your camera at the sun is not ideal if you shoot in AUTO mode, your camera will often find it harder to focus and much too bright. This is why it’s best to have something to block the sun, like a person, a tree, or an object like an umbrella if you are shooting in AUTO.
Clouds are good: Clouds act a natural reflector in the sky, and therefore it’s a great time to take photos! Clouds diffuse the light, making it land softer on your face and makes for prettier pictures with less shadows on the face and offering even light source.
Depth of Field: To get a creamy background and a sharp subject, separate your subject from the backdrop by at least 7 feet. This is called Bokeh- and it’s achieved when you reduce your apeture to between 1.4 - 2.0 depending on your camera.
