What to Wear to Your Photo Shoot

What you wear may be one of the MOST IMPORTANT DETAILS of your session. Outfits must coordinate well to photograph well. Wardrobe HUGELY effects the outcome of your photos. Here are your top 8 tips for what to wear to your photo session.

*I offer complimentary Styling Assistance to all of my clients. I show you exactly what each family member should wear or just give you ideas so you have the best photos possible!

Be sure to plan your outfits out completely at least 1 week prior to your session. I do offer a small client closet to my clients so please don't hesitate to reach out if you would like to see the clothing offered. As always, I am here for you if you have any questions, or would like to send me photos to help you decide. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND YOUR COLOR CHOICES DRASTICALLY EFFECT THE OVERALL LOOK OF YOUR GALLERY.

Here are a few general rules to help you through the process.

  1. Choose a color palate of 3-5 colors. You want your outfits to be cohesive without being "matchy matchy". Coordinate and compliment.
  2. Colors that photograph the best are burnt orange, mustard yellow, blues, dark greens, copper, brown and neutrals like cream, tan, black, brown, & white.
  3. Avoid overly bright colors, no hot pinks, lime green or bright yellow or bright red, etc. Neons are a no-no. They can create a very unflattering color cast on your skin.
  4. Layers are always a good idea. Wearing elements that can be added and taken away, like scarves, hats, cardigans, sweaters, and jackets are a great idea for variety and temperature changes.
  5. Steer clear of any large graphics, or images that will take away focus on the subject. Opt for a tee with a few buttons vs a tee shirt with a graphic. You want to choose timeless patterns and solids for a more finished, polished look.
  6. Don't forget to add in patterns, stripes, texture and layers. Try to get a good combination with a few of these things.
  7. Details matter- For those close up shots, think about your nails being groomed and noses wiped.
  8. Don't let your hard work be for nothing, finish out your looks with the right shoes.

A tip: Choose mom's outfit first and then build from there. Most importantly, be comfortable and confident. These photos are for you! I am here for you, feel free to reach out at any time and ask questions if you are having trouble piecing it together.

Another tip: Have 2 family members wear a common color to tie it all together. For example, if mom wears a red dress, have son wear red shoes, or daughter wear a red scarf or bow in her hair.
